According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there are more than 650,000 registered complaints on identity theft and fraud in the U.S. It grew at a very fast pace, having victimized an approximated 10 million individuals each year. That staggering amount means that for every minute, there are 19 people who become identity theft victims. In fact, on the year 2006, more than 70 million identities went missing due to improper handling of personal information by corporations and as a result over $1 billion was lost. Over the years, it has grown so fast that it is now competing against drug trafficking as the number one crime.

Statistics say that only 28% of identity theft incidents involve financial fraud, that is quite a number. However, if you combine the 19% from phone and utilities fraud, 18% from bank fraud, 13% from employment fraud, 8% from government and benefits fraud, 6% from loan fraud and 22% from others like insurance fraud they would weigh more than financial fraud. That means, you have to be on-guard against other means of identity theft not just financial fraud.

I know these facts about identity theft sound unbelievable but they are TRUE!

So, now that you are well-acquainted with the magnitude of this crime and how far-reaching it can be. Then, you must want to know some tips on how you can safeguard your identity.

Use Internet Safely

Never send any personal information, especially personal identification numbers by email. If you must shop online, choose web pages which have an image of a lock at the bottom of its page or have “https” in the address bar, these are secure ones. Also, never forget to keep your anti-virus software updated and to delete spam mails asking for your personal information.

Discard Private Records Properly

Discard documents that contain financial information that should be kept in private. You must shred them, you would be alarmed at how much getting hold of these statements can help thieves steal your identity.

Protect Your Social Security Number

Getting your social security number is the best personal information a thief could acquire from you. Just by those numbers alone they can access almost everything of yours especially your credit and bank accounts. You should memorize your number instead of carrying it with you, keep your card in a safe place and never write your number on checks.

Monitor Your Credit Accounts

You should monitor your credit accounts on a regular basis, this can help you in detecting identity theft early.

Keep these tips in mind and you’ll reduce your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft.

Given the prevalence of identity theft these days, it has now become increasingly important for you to find a way to protect your identity. But, knowing the severity and magnitude of identity theft, and the different ways your identity can be stolen from you as well as the varying ways they can steal from you, where do you begin?

Here are some questions and answers to help you look at things with more clarity so you can avoid identity theft.

What do identity thieves want from you?

They want your personal information. They are looking for your social security number and your account numbers, so they will target anything that might contain these information.

So, where can they find your personal information?

They can look for them in the most obvious places like your wallet or bag. Your wallet or bag probably contain your ID’s, credit and debit cards, and even papers which contain your personal information. You probably wrote account numbers or passwords on a piece of paper found in your wallet, just in case you forgot them.

They can also check your mailbox. Credit agencies and banks send you statement account reports and bills via mail. This is a great place for identity thieves to gain your personal information.

Your trash can also be a good place for them to look for your personal information. You probably throw receipts, bills, and slips in the bin, all of these contain valuable information about you. These can be used by thieves to steal your identity.

But the best source for your personal information is YOU. Thieves can pose as respectable companies and ask you for your personal information.

How will the identity thief use these things?

Well, first, they can purchase expensive items that can be sold easily using your credit cards. They can also open new accounts using your name and social security number, for example, a bank account, then they can use it to write bad checks. They can take out loans under your name, even buy a car. Also, they can get a job using your name or file for bankruptcy to avoid paying their debts. Worse, they can have you arrested by giving your name to the police!

Then, how can you protect yourself from identity theft?

First, do not carry your social security card or personal identification numbers in your purse or wallet, or anywhere with you if you can avoid it. Second, get your incoming mail as soon as you can to keep them from getting to it first, or you can have your mail deposited in PO Box. Third, shred documents containing your personal information before throwing them in the bin and keep the ones you have to keep in a safe box. Do not carry important documents everywhere you go, unless you need to. Finally, do not give out personal information casually, be careful and wary of doing so.

Now, go and start doing these things to protect your identity.

According to reports, as many as 9 million Americans are victims of identity theft every year. It is that prevalent and serious and so you have to know what to do to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft. Like getting an Identity Theft Protection to protect yourself from identity theft. On that note, there are a lot of insurance companies who offer this kind of service. The monthly payment for this type of service ranges from $9-$15. But, this is not your only alternative, you can also protect yourself using the following precautionary measures.

Preventing Identity Theft

1. Regularly monitor your credit accounts, look out for irregularities like new accounts and purchases you did not make. So, that in case of identity theft, you can detect it early and respond accordingly.

2. Shred papers like bank slips and other documents which contain your personal information because some people will purposely look for them in your trash just to get your identity and use it for their own gain.

3. Keep important documents in a safe place. As much as possible you should not carry them everywhere with you so that you won’t lose them or have them stolen from you.

4. Do not give personal information easily, safeguard it by revealing as little as possible.

However, in case you become a victim make sure you report the crime to the proper authorities.

Reporting Identity Theft

1. Report as soon as possible to any of the three: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Notifying one of them will compell them to notify the other two. Doing this fraud alert will allow them to be more cautious about your account and to contact you before making any decision.

2. Inform the police of the crime and have them make an identity theft report, listing all of the fraudulent accounts. Make sure you have a copy of the report.

3. Submit a complaint at the Federal Trade Commission and provide them with the police report number. The FTC maintains information on identity theft which is shared nationwide with those who are trying to catch the perpetrators. Also, do not forget to fill out the ftc fraud affidavit form.

4. Inform credit companies about the identity theft, do it in person and in writing. Point out the fraudulent accounts and transactions so that they will know which ones you are not liable for.

In closing, identity theft is deplorable and should be stopped soon before it destroys more lives!

Identity theft is a big problem for most people nowadays. So, it is important for you to know how to protect yourself and to do so, you need to be informed. One of the things you need to know about, are the types of identity theft out there.

Child Identity Theft

There are some people who target identities of children. And, more often than not, the thief is a family member, a relative or somebody close to the family. This is alarming because, although the child may not use his social security number until after 8 years or so, the thief can use the stolen identity to access a college fund for the child and steal it.

Social Security Identity Theft

This occurs when your social security number and your name are used to open a new credit account. Your SSN is probably one the most valuable pieces of personal information that somebody can steal from you. Once someone has your SSN, they can use it to assume your identity and evade tax or if they are a convict, make a clean slate for themselves.

Medical Identity Theft

Some people will use your personal information to benefit from your medical and health insurance. They can get medical treatment, surgery and drugs for free using our information. They can use your personal info to send fabricated bills to your insurance company.

Internet Identity Theft

Also known as online or computer theft. Unlike the usual identity theft where the thief takes something from you that has your personal information and use it to steal from you, for this theft, they do not need any of those. With online shopping becoming evermore popular, your computer probably has stored in its memory your personal information. Malware, viruses, and other rogue software applications can allow access to your personal information. They can then use your information to purchase items online using your identity or to open new credit accounts.

Business Identity Thefts

The usual target for these thieves are small to medium sized establishments. They will use the private information of a company to avail of their huge reserve of money and business partners.

Credit Card Identity Theft

In this case, your credit card information is used by the thief so they can purchase things for free under your identity.

More than knowing this information, it is more important for you to know how to protect yourself from identity thieves. Let this knowledge strengthen and empower you to vigilance!

With the alarming number of people becoming victims of identity theft, ID theft protection has become a necessity. It is imperative that we find a way to protect ourselves. Because there is a need and a sense of urgency, insurance companies have come up with service that they hope could abate all your identity theft fears.

However, because of the gravity of this matter, it is certain that you will want to choose the RIGHT company to avail identity theft protection from. The thing is, with the numerous insurance company promoting their services quite convincingly and promising the world to you, it becomes confusing and even difficult to select what identity theft protection will benefit you more.

So, for comparison purposes, and for you to be able to choose the best identity theft insurance for you, here are some of these insurance and the protection and service they offer. These are based on consumer reports and reviews of these services.

Lifelock

It was given full marks by consumers in terms of security, recovery assistance, additional features, customer support, and information protected. Among the insurance reviewed it ranked first. They do not sell your information to third party firms and are continuously improving their services and to reinforce protection of your identity. They do not offer to reimburse the money lost due to identity theft but they have $1M worth of assistance available for you if ever you do become a victim. In this way, you can go after the perpetrators full force.

ProtectMyID

It is ranked second and is one of the best. However, althought it monitors all your credit reports it needs to beef up on their security service, they need to offer more for their customers. They also have fraud resolution agents to help you recover your untarnished name if you become a victim of identity theft. One of their additional feature which is very useful is a service to protect your children from identity theft. Their customer support is also one of the best.

Identity Guard

This service is similar to ProtectMyID. Its security is very good, it does not give you fraud alerts but it monitors your account for possible danger. Another benefit from their plans is the free internet security suite. It focuses on protection rather recovery but its recovery service is still great, it offers up to $1M actual insurance and it has lost wallet protection. It offers 24-hour live customer support. Lastly, it protects all your personal information and even those found on public records.

Besides these three, there are more out there but those mentioned above were given the highest marks by customers. Choose wisely!

Numerous companies offering identity theft protection have cropped up lately and are offering a myriad of services which they guarantee are useful to you. One of the companies offering protection against identity theft is the Trilegiant Identity Theft Protection.

What is the Trilegiant Identity Theft Protection?

It is a credit-monitoring service. For this service, you need to pay almost $13 a month to get their protection.

What services do they offer?

They can give you a thorough report on your personal credit, which contains information from three bureaus. They give daily reports on their monitoring of the three bureaus as well as quarterly updates. Lastly, they offer an insurance of $10000 for expenses you will incur in case of identity theft.

Comments

While the Trilegiant Identity Theft Protection seem like a decent service, its service is limited and does not seem substantial. So, I think the price is too high for the low level of service they offer. Furthermore, their credit alert service is handled by Wells Fargo, and this company is now known to have placed in danger the personal information of their customers over the years. That is not to say that the situation has not been remedied but with a track record like that, I wouldn’t want to entrust my personal information to them.

Recommendation

Honestly, I do not think trilegiant’s service is worth it. There are other companies with wider and better services who do not only offer credit monitoring and not merely $10000 of insurance but up to $1M worth of insurance in case of identity theft. What’s more, they only cost around $9 a month. That seems like only a $4 difference between their prices but the extensiveness of the service they provide is world’s apart.

Well and good, right? So, is there also a Free Identity Theft Protection around?

There are no companies that provide free identity theft protection but most of the things they do for you can be done on your own. Credit monitoring can also be done by you not just by companies. You make use of receipts, slips and other proofs of purchase to keep track of your credit. To protect yourself from identity theft you can try to be more careful and cautious with regards to your personal information.

In the end, the choice is up to you. You can choose to avail the service of insurance companies for your own peace of mind but you can also choose to do-it-yourself!
